Scouts can earn:

Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge Requirement 7: Take part in an emergency service project, either a real one or a practice drill, with a Scouting unit or a community agency.

Radio Merit Badge Requirement 9a (2): Carry on a 10-minute real or simulated ham radio contact using voice or Morse code; use proper call signs, Q signals, and abbreviations. (Licensed ham radio operators may substitute five QSL cards as evidence of contacts with amateur radio operators from at least three different call districts.) Properly log the real or simulated ham radio contact and record the signal report.

Radio Merit Badge Requirement 7: Visit a radio installation approved in advance by your counselor (ham radio station, broadcast station, or public service communications center, for example). Discuss what types of equipment you saw in use, how it was used, what types of licenses required to operate and maintain the equipment, and the purpose of the station.

Jamboree on the Air is the largest gathering of Scouts in the World. In 2012, nearly 700,000 Scouts participated from over 6,000 amateur radio stations in 150 countries around the world. Every Scout in North Star can participate in JOTA at the Fall Camporee, October 18 - 19 at Smithville Lake.
